1 in 5 Depressed Americans Are Self-Medicating With Screens, Cannabis, Weight-Loss Drugs & More, New Report Finds
NeuroKaire’s Self-Medication Generation report reveals how Americans with depression are turning to DIY treatments as they lose faith in trial-and-error care.

For millions of Americans living with depression, the path to effective treatment remains frustratingly slow, costly, and uncertain. In The Self-Medication Generation, the first installment of NeuroKaire’s Depression in America Research Series, new data reveals how patients are increasingly taking mental health treatment into their own hands.
Based on responses from 18,341 U.S. adults, including 3,737 individuals diagnosed with depression, the report examines how people are navigating a healthcare system that often requires months—or even years—of trial-and-error antidepressant prescribing. The findings show that many Americans are turning to self-directed alternatives, including cannabis, CBD, weight-loss medications, online communities, gaming, crafting, and other wellness-focused behaviors in an effort to manage their symptoms.
The report also highlights the significant economic burden of depression, revealing lower earnings, higher reliance on government insurance, and financial barriers that can make accessing effective care even more difficult. Across generations, depressed Americans are increasingly seeking information, support, and treatment strategies outside traditional healthcare channels.
Perhaps most importantly, the findings underscore a growing disconnect between what patients need and what the current mental healthcare system delivers. As individuals search for personalized solutions on their own, the report points to an urgent need for more precise, biology-driven approaches to depression treatment.
The Self-Medication Generation is the first in a multi-part research initiative exploring how depression is reshaping the lives, behaviors, and healthcare decisions of Americans today.
